As the population of the Amish grows in North America and around Arthur, Illinois, many people are becoming more and more curious about the Amish. The Illinois Amish Interpretive Center houses a museum dedicated to the Old Order Amish and knowledgeable employees eager to answer your curious notions about the Amish people and their lifestyle.

At the Center, you will see an introductory video that explains the heritage of the Amish people as well as customs today in addition to seeing exhibits on buggies, barns, quilts, homes, and much more. You can also schedule meals in an Amish home and tours of Amish dairy farms, homes, and woodworking businesses. Our meal hostesses are members of the Old Order Amish Church and their made-from-scratch cooking is absolutely the best you can find. The meal consists of a salad, fried chicken and one other meat, mashed potatoes and gravy, noodles or dressing, vegetable side, homemade bread and jams/jellies! After the meal you will be served your choice of the fruit or cream pie of the day.

Also through the Center, you can take a tour of the inside of an Amish home, where an Amish hostess will show you her living room, kitchen, bedroom and other spaces while discussing such topics as weddings, church services, and the differences between Amish and English living. On the dairy farm tour, an Amish host who will show you around his barn and milking parlor and discuss many aspects of the dairy operation, including breeding and milking. He will show you the dairy cows and calves, and draft horses he uses to raise grain and hay for his operation.

The use of diesel engines to produce power is the highlight of the woodworking tour. An Amish woodworker explains how he makes furniture from start to finish as you walk through his shop. You can also take one of our step-on guides into the Amish countryside to get a first hand look at how the Amish people live today. Our guides all have first-hand experience with the Amish, some having been raised Amish and others having immediate family who are Amish.

We strive to provide up-to-date, accurate information to our visitors so that they can have an educational and entertaining visit. The Center also keeps an accurate map of Amish-owned stores that welcome visitors.
