The volunteer staff of the Douglas County Museum has
welcomed tens of thousands of visitors to the museum since it first opened
its doors in 1989. Believing that versatile and quality exhibits
should be key components to the museum's educational program, the trustees
long ago decided to offer new exhibits each year rather than one exhibit
that never changes. Among the subjects of past exhibits have been:
World War II, jewelry, religion, railroading, radio, Indian artifacts,
sports, romance, cross stitch, house work, agriculture, toys and childhood
memories, quilts, Korean War, tea pots and fine china, the Fifties and
Sixties, and many more. These ever-changing exhibits, as well
as accompanying programs, make the Douglas County Museum dynamic and new for
repeat and first-time visitors. The exhibits, as well as the
outstanding historic preservation and educational outreach efforts
demonstrated by the museum staff, earned this museum on the Illinois prairie
nation recognition when it received the Albert Corey Award from the American
Association of State and Local History. The Douglas County
Museum has a research library which features American history books and
local history references. Our staff is always happy to assist visiting
genealogists, students, and others who are searching for information about
some aspect of the history of Douglas County and East Central Illinois.
Among the resources in our library are census, county histories, indexes,
cemetery books, plat maps, family histories, etc. Another important
resource for historians is the museum's Vertical File with thousands of
obituaries, marriage and birth notices, and alphabetized subject files about
county people, places, and events. Website Expansion and Updates
are made possible by a grant from the
Illinois Association of Museums. |
